Energized, heartfelt fiddling, steady guitar, tight bass and vocal harmonies and syncopated banjo meld to form the driving old-time sound of the Earl White Band. The band is led, in high gear, by fiddler Earl White, a founding member of the Greengrass Cloggers who is known for his energetic, driving style and his arsenal of unusual tunes (not to mention his fabulous clog dancing); he's also one of the few contemporary African American musicians playing in the Appalachian tradition that was once an integral part of rural black communities in the southeastern US. The dynamic quartet of old-time music veterans also features Dan Warrick on guitar, Brendan Doyle on banjo, and Martha Hawthorne on bass and harmony vocals. A growing presence in the Bay Area old-time scene over the past three years, the Earl White Band's performance at the Freight kicks off this years Black History Month concert series.
