annual fundraiser for award-winning jazz band
Door 7:30pm, Music 8:00pm | Purchase advance tickets: $15.50

Look out: here comes the next generation! The Freight sizzles with youthful energy tonight as the award-winning, globe-trotting Berkeley High School Jazz Ensemble presents a benefit concert for the school's music program. The bill will be shared with the high school's Lab Big Band in what promises to be a truly dynamic, inspiring evening of music. Under the direction of Charles Hamilton for the past 22 years, the Berkeley High School Jazz Ensemble is famed as an innovative program, which has produced dozens of world-renowned musicians including Joshua Redman, Peter Apfelbaum, Dave Ellis, members of Mingus Amungus, the Farallon Brass Ensemble, and other prestigious jazz and classical groups. The 26-member Ensemble, which was named the nation's top high school band at the 2003 Monterey Jazz Festival competition, plays bebop and big band classics as well as more contemporary charts. The fourth-fifth grade Berkeley Arts Magnet School Percussion Ensemble kicks the evening off to a red-hot start. Don't miss it!
