Django Reinhardt & Stéphane Grappelli: their musical influence in the Bay Area, 3:00 pmWith David Grisman, David Balakrishnan, Andy Gilbert, and George Cole (moderator). This lively conversation will focus on the lives of Stéphane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt with particular emphasis on Grapelli’s work in the Bay Area in the late 1970s and early ‘80s. David Grisman met Stéphane while writing the score for the 1978 movie, King of the Gypsies. They began performing together and recorded a great album, Stéphane Grappelli/David Grisman Live, playing classics like “Satin Doll” and Django’s “Swing.” Joining them in several performances was violinist David Balakrishnan, Turtle Island Quartet’s co-founder. Steven Dudash is an internationally renowned master of the 5-string viola whose interpretations and original compositions are rooted in the Gypsy violin tradition. Writer Andrew Gilbert’s deep expertise and insightful articles about music, particularly jazz, frequently appear in the San Francisco Chronicle and the Boston Globe. George Cole is a performing and teaching musician with a passion for gypsy jazz music. He is one of the driving forces behind the Esprit de Django et Stephane Festival.
