The voice is a profound instrument, and is at the heart of Indian classical music. The format of this class allows participation by all comers, and emphasis will be placed on the creativity of each individual, and on the clarity of melodic ideas at every level of skill. For newcomers, each session offers a tangible introduction to the world of one raga (melody) in Indian classical music, and a progressive exploration of that raga's structure and aesthetic, with practical guidance in the basics of intonation and voice culture. For experienced musicians, each session also provides a forum to explore creativity in singing and the curves, patterns, and ornaments that characterize vocal improvisation. Rhythmic concepts are also introduced through singing.

Gautam Tejas Ganeshan is known for exploring the ecstatic edge of contemporary Indian classical music. He has guest-lectured on Carnatic (South Indian classical) music for the Music of India courses at UC Berkeley and UC Santa Cruz, and has conducted workshops on singing and the aesthetics of Indian classical music at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and at the Asian Art Museum (SF). He is the founder and director of the Sangati Community Center for South Asian Music in san Francisco.
