Intro to Bluegrass Jamming II w/ Ran Bush
Tuesdays, 6:30 - 8:00 pm (starts 4/27) This series is for the folks that have been through at least one session of the Intro to Bluegrass Jamming 101 Classes. The emphasis in 102 will be on "next level" steps, such as playing back-up, kickoffs and tags, playing (in class) without chord sheets or tab, and maintaining eye contact with the singer or song leader. People will be encouraged (when they're ready) to practice taking the "quarterback" role when they call a tune. Songs will be played at moderately faster tempos, e.g. up to 100-140 bpm (beats per minute) in some songs. Class time will be spent learning and playing more complex songs, soloing (if you want to), and two-part and three-part harmony singing. This is a practical, hands-on course-you'll play lots of Bluegrass Jam standards, and cover a new song each week. Attendees are welcome to bring tape recorders and song books. Course outline, song list, and summary notes will be provided. Guest instructors include Bill Evans. Prerequisites: Basic familiarity with folk music and Bluegrass repertoire is helpful. You should have a basic understanding of the Nashville Number System, and be able to use a capo on your guitar, dobro, or banjo to play chords in various keys. For fiddle, mandolin, and bass, you should be able to play comfortably in typical Bluegrass keys such as G, A, B, Bb, C and D. Ran Bush has played music professionally in the Monterey Bay area and San Francisco Bay area for over thirty years. He also taught software classes at local community colleges for fifteen years. These experiences are now combined, helping others to listen, learn, and sing and play music in a fun, supportive environment. www.cbaontheweb.org/teacher_viewdtl.asp?teacherid=16 You can register for classes and workshops online with a credit card (just click on the "register online" link) or through the Freight box office in person with cash, check, or credit card.
