Formally founded in 1987, Parno Graszt (meaning "white horse" in Romani, a symbol of purity and freedom) embodies authentic traditional Hungarian "gypsy" music. Virtuosic, lightning-speed playing and amazing dancing are an integral part of the show, as are intriguing instruments like spoons, a milk churn, and "oral bass," a type of vocal improvisation made by the percussionist. The band has made a splash in the European world music charts with albums like Hit the Piano and In My World, but it's pretty clear that their live show is not to be missed! As Simon Broughton (Songlines magazine) said after spending a weekend with Parno Graszt in their home village: "They do not use sources of Gypsy music, they are the source itself."
