Join Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, and record producer Rodney Crowell and New York Times best-selling author Mary Karr for a CD release concert in support of their first collaboration, the album KIN (Vanguard), a collection of ballads and country rockers with rugged underpinnings and a thread of grace and redemption. Joining Rodney and Mary for tonight's show is special guest, guitarist Steuart Smith. A multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, writer, and producer, Steuart has shared lead guitar duties with Joe Walsh in the Eagles since 2001.
With a long-standing reputation as a poet among songwriters, Rodney is a masterful storyteller and hit generator whose highly influential records have spawned dozens of classic country songs, including his Grammy Award-winning "After All This Time." With a list of folks who have recorded his songs that stretches from Johnny Cash and Keith Urban to Emmylou Harris and Norah Jones, Rodney is a recent inductee into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Mary is an award-winning poet, memoirist, and an unstoppable force in the literary world, whose best-selling works like Lit, Cherry, and The Liar’s Club receive rave reviews from major newspapers throughout the country. (The last of the three spent more than a year on the New York Times bestsellers list.) Mary is the recipient of numerous fellowships and awards, including a Guggenheim, a Radcliffe Bunting Fellowship, The Whiting Writer's Award, and a Pushcart Prize. With the release of KIN, Mary adds yet another title—songwriter—to her pedigree.
After reading Cherry and The Liar’s Club, Rodney name-checked Mary in “Earthbound,” a track off his album Fate's Right Hand. “I called out to her in the darkness because she was a bona fide poet I knew could write songs,” says Rodney. Come hear the result!
