Alice Gerrard – interviewed by Suzy Thompson
Due to COVID-19/Coronavirus and the Bay Area’s shelter-in-place orders, the Freight & Salvage is temporarily closed (we’ll be back soon!) and Berkeley Bluegrass Festival has been canceled. But because we miss you, and the music, and our beloved Bluegrass musicians, we’ve thrown together a small livestream performance featuring several of the artists that were scheduled for this year’s festival. Tune in at 5pm pacific time on Saturday, April 4, 2020 starting at 5PM to The Freight’s Facebook Page.

Trailer: You Gave Me A Song Documentary
We had planned to screen the film You Gave Me A Song, an intimate portrait of old-time music pioneer Alice Gerrard and her remarkable, unpredictable journey creating and preserving traditional music. We’re pleased that Alice Gerrard will join us for the livestream in a Q&A with Suzy Thompson. To catch the documentary, look for a screening planned during Berkeley Old Time Music Convention, September 22-27, 2020. Alice Gerrard will also perform at BOTMC.
We have an opportunity to band together in support of those whose music builds our community. The Freight is dedicated to highlighting the artists whose shows have been postponed/rescheduled/or canceled in response to the Covid-19 Pandemic (artist names are linked to their sites where applicable). HERE’S OUR ORIGINAL (NOW CANCELED) SCHEDULE:
For the fifth year, the Freight & Salvage celebrates incredible talent with the Berkeley Bluegrass Festival, April 2-5, 2020. Programmed by Grammy-award winner Laurie Lewis and The Freight’s program director Peter Williams, Berkeley Bluegrass Festival brings together leaders of the genre, up-and-coming artists, and music fans for three days of concerts, jams, free workshops, and good old-fashioned merriment to kick off the summer music festival season.
Free workshops, jams and other activities (including a youth jam, sing-along, and family squaredance) will be offered throughout the weekend.
All shows take place at Freight & Salvage, 2020 Addison St in the Littlefield Room, our state of the art listening room, except for Gallery Stage performances which take place in the Freight & Salvage lobby before show time. Four Day Passes available (advance purchase only).
