Bluegrass Guitar Essentials: Crossing Your T's & More
In concert with the California Banjo Extravaganza at the Freight, Saturday, November 11, 8 p.m.:

Tim teaches one session from 1 to 3:45 p.m. designed for all levels of players. At 4 p.m., all participants come together in the main performance hall for a final Q & A session with mandolinist John Reischman and banjo players Charlie Cushman and Bob Carlin. This is a hands-on, “bring your guitar and let’s pick” afternoon with topics appropriate for all levels of players. Audio and videotaping of workshops are allowed. Experience this unique opportunity to learn up close from one of the best players and teachers in the world. $70 admission.

At the conclusion of the Mini-Camp, store your instrument safely at the Freight, grab dinner in downtown Berkeley and come back to enjoy the California Banjo Extravaganza in concert at 8 p.m.

Bluegrass Guitar Essentials: Crossing your T’s & More!

This session will include the following topics:

• Focus on the “Ts”: Timing, Tuning, Tone, Technique & Taste and how everyone can improve these aspects of their guitar playing.
• Review of rhythm patterns along with common chords and substitutions.
• Learning the neck through the CAGED system.
• Thinking about improvising using floating and other techinques.
• Constructing solos based around melody.
• Backing up singers and instrumentalists.

About Tim and his teaching: Tim has a long background in education. He worked on a PhD in History at Miami University in the mid 1980’s and has taught American History, Western Civilization, Appalachian Studies, Mass Communications and Popular Culture, American Roots Music, Bluegrass Traditions and personal instruction in guitar and banjo at several institutions, including Miami University East Tennessee State University, and Appalachian State University. He and Caroline Wright co-authored Still Inside: The Tony Rice Story (2010) the critically acclaimed authorized biography of bluegrass Hall of Fame member Tony Rice.

Tim has taught at almost every major bluegrass-oriented camp, including Rockygrass Academy, Camp Bluegrass (South Plains College, TX), Augusta Heritage, Wintergrass Academy, Sore Fingers (UK), Bluegrass at the Beach, Nashcamp, Kaufman's Flatpicking Camp, California Bluegrass Association Camp at Grass Valley, St. Louis Flatpick, Resosummit, Summergrass Academy, Grand Targhee, Bluegrass Masters Weekend, and Nashville Flatpick and Songwriting Camp. He’s led workshops at dozens of festivals over the years as well, and founded the Bluegrass in the Schools Program at IBMA in the 1990s.
