Jazzy Arranging for Guitar
Jazzy Arranging for Guitar
Energize your guitar arrangements using Jazz chords to harmonize vocals, intensify dynamism,
punctuate rhythm, and create a compelling musical journey.

Learn to analyze the harmonic structure of your songs, and use the analysis to craft a
beautiful, effective, and coherent chord progression.
Understand how to select the best chord for each musical moment, and to color your chords
with evocative tones.

After taking this workshop, participants will have deeper insight into tunes and charts, and new ideas for
arranging the tunes they love to play.
Please note: Workshop incorporates different content from July 2017 workshop of the same name.

Workshop Roadmap:

Our learning path includes the following elements:
Briefly review chord arithmetic.
Define and discuss 'cadences', 'chord families', and 'chord substitutions'.
Explore 'chord extensions and alterations'.
Consider 'secondary dominant chords', and chords drawn from the 'parallel minor/major key'.
Perform Chord Function Analyses of several traditional Jazz standards, identify the role performed by
each chord, observe the chord substitutions, recognize the cadences, examine changes of key, and assess
the journey from Introduction to Coda.
Working solo, in small groups, or in one large group, participants will have the opportunity to arrange at
least one Jazz standard, and to evaluate the outcome..

Activities include instructor presentation; question and answer; arranging a tune; learning to play a Jazz tune.
Repertoire includes traditional Jazz standards and well-known Bossa Nova tunes.
Materials Fee: Please be prepared to pay a $10 fee for workshop materials. Instructor will collect fee in class.
