Three local songwriter talents team up for an evening of original songs at The Freight: Megan McLaughlin performs with Anita Bear Sandwina and Tom Kuhn as the folk and rock trio The Musers; multi-instrumentalist Michael Patch is joined by Clinton Day; and 25-time West Coast Songwriters award-winner Max Newton returns with a new set of original songs.
Max returns to the Freight after five years with a new set of original songs and 25 West Coast Songwriters awards. He sings about love and politics and nature and outsiders and losers and hope and cynicism and joy and triumph. Some of his protagonists have questionable moral fiber but their stories need telling, too. Over the past decade Max has hosted open mics in Berkeley and currently produces “Muzic Zoo” at Berkeley Community Media. His YouTube channel has more than 500 videos of open mic performances by more than 100 people who have attended his events.
Michael Patch is a local musician and songwriter, well known over the past several years at the Freight and Salvage open mics. His material mines numerous issues of interpersonal relationships and conundrums of the human heart, commonly leading to comparisons to folk-rock artists such as Jackson Browne. A multi-instrumentalist working on guitar and piano, he has recorded five CDs of original material and is set to begin a sixth. When he’s not playing music, he has maintained a career as a psychology professor at California State University, East Bay.
