In the 1990s Rimpa Siva received worldwide recognition as a child prodigy of the Indian drums. The daughter of a respected tabla player, her talent was noticed early and she has been performing for live audiences since the age of nine. Siva has received numerous awards and was the subject of a French-made documentary, “Rimpa Siva: Princess of Tabla.” She has broken many barriers for women tabla players and inspired other girls to take up the instrument professionally that was traditionally reserved for boys and men only. Her playing has earned accolades from Zakir Hussain, Ali Akbar Khan, and many other musical masters. In July she was given the coveted Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar award from the Sangeet Natak Akademi.
