WeSing Vocal Festival
Join us for an evening of inspiring and uplifting vocal music! Featuring the youthful energy of Oakland School for the Art's change-makers Vocal Rush; the fierce, witchy sounds of breakout vocal quintet HIVE; and the powerful, epic vocals and grooves from Oakland-based band Elephantine. This concert is part of a larger weekend-long festival called WeSing Vocal Festival -- more info below.

The WeSing Vocal Festival is an empowering, educational and community-centered event for singers and vocal music enthusiasts of all ages, gender identities and stylistic preferences. WeSing aims to bring people together via the transformative power of vocal music. Through community and connection-building, circle-singing, live performances and inspiring, interactive workshops, WeSing wants its participants to leave the event restored and uplifted. WeSing is produced by the Women's A Cappella Association, a nonprofit dedicated to fostering and advancing authenticity, connection, creativity and inclusivity - onstage and off - within the a cappella community and beyond, with a dedicated effort to highlight and lift up women, LGBTQ+ and people of color.

HIVE
HIVE
HIVE is a group of 5 fierce and very different women making music with just their voices and some crazy sound effects - all while trying to make the world a better place. All HIVE singers are also music educators and not only sing and perform, but also teach workshops on vocal music. Giving back to the musical community through education is a core value of the group.

The singers of HIVE come together from across 3 states to sing their unique arrangements of creative covers and original music. With Lisa and Moorea from the SF Bay Area, Christina and NIna from Los Angeles, and Courtney in Salt Lake City, Utah, the women of HIVE meet every 2 months for full-immersion musical weekend retreats to develop their sound, connect as people, practice for hours on end, make music videos, laugh, connect and eat bread like champions.

HIVE is influenced by craftsmanship in songwriting, lyrics that are raw in honesty and true to spirit, and music that moves people. Artists like Krystle Warren, Hiatus Kaiyote, Merrill Garbus, Becca Stevens and Laura Mvula have shaped the sound and soul of Hive’s music.

HIVE is Christina Wilson, Courtney Jensen, Lisa Forkish, Moorea Dickason and Nina Kasuya.
Vocal Rush
Vocal Rush
Vocal Rush is a five-time national champion a cappella ensemble based out of Oakland School for the Arts (OSA) and comprised of singers ages 14-18. Combining passion, talent and dedication, along with the vision of director/founder Lisa Forkish, Vocal Rush has become one of the most respected high school a cappella groups in the U.S. since their inception in March, 2011. Before joining the renowned School of Vocal Music faculty at OSA, led by chair/founder Cava Menzies, Forkish was music director for the University of Oregon’s award-winning a cappella group Divisi, featured in Mickey Rapkin's book "Pitch Perfect," later made into the box-office smash film. Vocal Rush has received numerous accolades, including national championship titles in 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017, and perhaps most notably, a third place win on NBC's hit a cappella competition show, “The Sing-Off" in 2013. Past members of Vocal Rush have performed for President Obama as well as OSA founder, California Governor Jerry Brown. Vocal Rush has released four albums and received numerous Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards and nominations, including two nods for Best High School Album. The ensemble has the soulful stage presence that reflects all that is unique to OSA and sets them apart in the a cappella scene. Vocal Rush brings to life the heart and soul of Oakland School for the Arts, putting their all into every performance. See these young singers in action at www.youtube.com/osavocalrush.
